Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two-year chemical technology degree or 18 months applied process technology (preferred) .
  • 2+ years’ experience as chemical or refinery operator or related experience in primary metals, natural gas processing, coke oven operation and other industries which use large rotating equipment

Physical Requirements:

  • May be exposed to extremes in outside temperature, noise, dirt, etc. Works at night with limited lighting.
  • Maintains current all training required by OSHA, RCRA, TSCA, DOT, OSHA PSM/RMP, etc.
  • Climbs ladders and stairways on a routine basis.
  • Wears air supplied respirators or full-face canister respirator when required by job conditions.
  • Routinely operates large manual valves, hooks up 2″ and 3″ chemical hoses and performs other tasks which require strength and conditioning.

Job Summary:
The Chemical Operator is responsible for the safe operation of the plant and the safety of all people at the plant site.


  • Makes routine adjustments of equipment for limited and readily definable and measurable variables such as temperature, pressure or flow
  • Routinely checks equipment operation and corrects problems by adjustments or notifying shift supervisor that corrective action is required
  • Logs data and maintains records of equipment condition
  • Operates fork lift truck to move operating supplies as needed
  • Operates manual and automatic valves to control process
  • Performs analytical tests (color, freeze point, pH) to monitor process
  • RCRA job duties: (a) May clean up small spills, (b) May sample, package, drum, and load plant materials. (c) May transport plant materials to and from storage via forklift. (d) May mark and label materials for shipment as directed by the Accounting Analyst. (e) May sign as shipper freight bills for non-RCRA regulated wastes and products certifying proper classification, description, packaging, marking, and labeling
  • Conducts daily vibration monitoring of rotating equipment
  • Performs non-craft specific plant maintenance including (but not limited to) repairing low pressure steam leaks, repairing/replacing steam traps, installing chain wheel safety cables
  • Performs non-craft specific grounds maintenance including (but not limited to) lawn mowing, weed eating, painting, winterization, and general clean up
  • Participates in plant efforts to achieve OSHA and CMA PSM/RMP compliance through implementation PSM/RMP-related instructions and procedures, participation in PSM/RMP training, HAZOP’s, and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews.
  • Maintains current on all training required by OSHA, RCRA, TSCA, DOT, OSHA PSM/RMP, etc.
