RCBI to Assist Energy Innovator

Dec. 17, 2015

HUNTINGTON — As a winner at this year’s TransTech Energy Business Development Conference, an Athens, Ohio-based company will receive technical assistance from the Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing (RCBI) to develop a combined heat and power unit for consumers.

Resilient Power Solutions was the recipient of the new Advanced Manufacturing and Prototyping Award, sponsored by RCBI, that provides engineering design and prototyping assistance.

“Entrepreneurs and innovators consistently demonstrate their abilities to think outside the box with inventive ideas that promise to improve our everyday life,” said Charlotte Weber, RCBI Director & CEO. “The RCBI Advanced Manufacturing and Prototyping Award recognizes these contributions, rewards innovators and assists them in bringing commercially viable ideas to market.”

Staged annually in Morgantown, W.Va., the TransTech Energy Business Development Conference promotes start-up companies in energy, manufacturing and sustainability. Morgan Hager and Randall Gabriel, both systems engineers, are partners in Resilient Power Solutions and pitched the concept for the heat and power unit at the conference in October.

Running on biomass, the unit will serve as a space heater and water heater and provide 2 kilowatts of electricity. It will be of use to individuals who are completely off the electric grid or those who want to offset the electricity they are receiving from a utility company. Initially, the new product will run on wood pellets, which are widely available.

With technical assistance from RCBI, the partners will develop a prototype for the unit’s engine and determine the best way to manufacture it. The partners hope to have the entire unit for sale by mid-2017.
