RCBI Assists Becker/SMC with ISO 9001: 2008 Recertification
July 8, 2015
HUNTINGTON — Becker/SMC has earned ISO 9001: 2008 recertification, a commitment by the organization to enhance customer satisfaction by meeting customer- or market-specific requirements and continually improve its performance.
The Huntington-based manufacturer faced a significant challenge as it prepared for recertification. After restructuring and implementing a new business management system, the process became more complicated. Becker/SMC then turned to the Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing (RCBI) for Quality Management systems assistance.
“In a month’s time, RCBI got us back on track,” said Darron Nelson, OEM product line manager for Becker/SMC. “It was painful. It was a long month, but they did it.”
Charlotte Weber, Director & CEO at RCBI, congratulated Becker/SMC on its focus on Quality.
“We’re proud to have helped another manufacturer earn ISO re-certification – and equally pleased to add its name to the growing list of companies we have similarly assisted,” Weber said.
Marking its 75th birthday last year, Becker/SMC is owned by Becker Mining Systems, a global supplier for the mining industry. Becker/SMC designs and manufactures electrical components, open-type and explosion-proof motor starters, longwall electrical controls and power distribution equipment for a variety of industries.
This wasn’t the first time that Becker/SMC looked to RCBI for assistance. RCBI worked with the company to achieve its initial certification in 2011. RCBI continues to regularly assist the manufacturer with its ISO audits.
RCBI has provided Quality Management implementation courses and assistance to more than 200 companies and continues to work with companies across the Mid-Atlantic region providing updates, gap analyses and work instructions. Nearly 50 companies have become registered to specific Standards as a direct result of RCBI assistance; others are in the registration process while still others are compliant to various standards because of RCBI efforts.
An influx of requests about the updated ISO 9001: 2015 Standard, established by the International Organization for Standardization, is underway because of the forthcoming revised version of the Standard. Quality management systems are increasingly important as more large companies require their sub-tier suppliers to register their quality management systems to recognized international or industry-specific standards, Ms. Weber said. Other companies insist their suppliers be compliant with, if not registered to, these rigorous standards.Publication of the revised Standard is scheduled to occur this fall.
Operating as West Virginia’s Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center, RCBI encourages job creation, economic development, innovation and entrepreneurship by supporting manufacturing technology. RCBI offers access to leading-edge equipment, specialized training and electronic commerce assistance for everyone from sole proprietors to Fortune 500 companies so they can remain at the forefront of innovation in an increasingly global economy.
