All things local is theme of Oct. 19 food & farm event
Locally sourced food will be the focus Oct. 19 as the inaugural Local by Local: A Food & Farm Conference & Expo kicks off at Pumpkin Park in Milton.
“The goal is to build a sustainable food system by promoting the use of locally sourced foods in grocery stores, homes and restaurants, and to support the growing number of local food producers,” said Evan Nelson, lean agriculture systems specialist at the Robert C. Byrd Institute (RCBI).
The free event will feature area food producers and industry experts leading sessions about business management, farm financials, income diversification, marketing & promotion, and navigating food regulations.
Speakers will include Nancy Bruns of J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works, Fritz Boettner of Sprouting Farms and Turnrow Appalachian Farm Collective, Jennifer Jones of Swift Level Fine Meats, Leslie Schaller of the Appalachian Center for Economic Networks and many others.
The event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., will include an exhibition hall, a free locally sourced lunch and will be followed by a networking social from 5-7 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to set up booths to share information about their roles in the local food movement.
